Intent VS Result

Adolf Hitler fell in a river and nearly drowned when he was a child. He was heroicly saved by another boy, but the question is, did the boy do the right thing? On one hand, saving young Hitler resulted in World War 2 with 70-85 million deaths or 3% of the World’s population at the time.

But the boy never had any ill intentions and only ever intended to save another helpless boy’s life. So in judging actions that the boy took, we must ask; whether it is more important to look at what the boy intended, or instead to look at the resulting situation caused by his survival?

What is more important when judging the actions of the boy? His intent or the result? by the end of this speech, you will have heard both perspectives about intent vs result and you’ll have the information required to form your own informed opinion.

One argument that can be proposed for the result of a person action’s being more important than there intent is the harsh reality that only the result will matter in the long term. for example if person A is driving their car and does not intend to hit person B but he is hit, it does not matter that person A never wanted it to happen person B stills gets hit by a car.

The reality is the results don’t only affect you, they affect everybody around you. this means that the consequence’s of a person’s actions are irreversible and they can create unintentional effects on other people.

This is why more importance should be placed on the result of a person’s action as they force changes onto other people without their control, and once something has happened, the consequences are irreversible. therefore to judge a person’s actions one must only look at the result.

However, of course, assessing somebody only on the result of their action’s does not show the thought’s and intentions behind the actions of the people in question. For example, if somebody were to actively plan to harm someone else and then for some reason fail to do so, it would be completely illogical to asses the person as safe or normal because the result of their actions is that target is safe.

It is unreasonable to come to this conclusion. this is because it poorly follows what we as humans perceive to be justifiable, as their intent shows there nature more clearly. this also means that unfortunate mistakes or conscious decisions are seen and interpreted as what they are to give a more accurate and unbiased view on a person’s actions.

So in judging a person’s actions by looking at their intent, you would be able better understand the nature of their actions.

So what is more important in judging the actions of a person. their intent or the result. if you ask me both have their strengths and weaknesses. for example, judging somebody by the result of their actions would mean people would be treated harshly or leniently according to the consequences of their actions.

But this means unintentional consequences are treated the same as conscious decisions which can result in over the top responses for genuine mistakes and intentional wrongdoings could be treated as minor errors.

In regards to judging a person’s actions on their intent, it is very useful for understanding the motivation’s for their actions and the nature of them. this prevents genuine mistakes from being misinterpreted for deliberate action.

But the problem is that even genuine mistakes should carry certain repercussions as it would be wrong not to correct mistakes that severely affected other people. so my opinion is that to correctly judge a person’s action’s a combination of both the result and their intent is required with a bias towards their intent.

This is because the shortfalls of both can be overcome with appropriate use of the other. however, there should be a minor bias towards their intent due to our human nature of mistakes and imperfection. the bias would allow a little leniency for the genuine mistakes that are part of human nature.

In conclusion, I believe neither intent or result are more important in judging the actions of a person. instead, to correctly judge the actions of a person it is best to take a combination of their intent and the result of their actions.

this prevents judgements from being over the top or too lenient as the combination of using both the result and the intent to determine the severity of their actions integrates the human element of intent and the reality of results into the decision.

Such as a Judgment in court, a consensus of the jury is required for any action to be taken. the same is true for deciding which basis is more valuable for judging a person’s actions.

What would you value? If you were a member of a jury. And a case was put in front of you where a person t-boned a bus at high speed and killed 10 people inside unintentionally. Would you decide that the result of killing 10 people is the most important factor, and rule that the driver is a murder?

Or would you look at the drivers intent and decide that they never wanted this result and therefore they can not be held accountable in any way to the 10 deaths. Or do you believe a mixture is required for a correct decision? Where on the scale do you believe that the importance should be placed?

Title: prisoner of birth

Author: Jeffery Archer

text type: Novel

“I have discovered with advancing years that few things are entirely black or white, but more often different shades of grey.”. law is a tedious balancing to determain black from white and innocent from guilty however after reading the novel “A Prisoner of Birth” by Jeffrey Archer I felt outraged that an innocent man could be tried in court for a murder he did not commit and found guilty and have to live with these consequences as i previosly belived that courts were designed to allow both prespectives to be heard, the truth to be determained and the correct decion made . however during the sentancing danny cartwright’s lawer tried on multiple occasions to try to shift the case in the direction of the true murderer however was constantly shut down and unable to point the fingure in the correct direction. this resulted in danny being sentanced to 22 years in prison. This huge injustice and failure of the legal system that results in a completely incorrect sentence give’s me a feeling of distrust in the processes involved in making a ruling in court. It made me consider how many innocent men and women were forced to serve an unjust sentence. The book also covered why, for  danny cartwright, pleading guilty for a lesser crime was not an option. “I could spend the next twenty years of my life living a lie, and if it takes me that long to prove that I’m innocent, that has to be better than the world believing that I killed my best mate.”. this quote shows that danny can not and will not let himself accept the possibility of a lesser scentance with the knowlage that it will publiclly declear him of killing his friend. he is prepared to even potentially go to prison for 20 years as long as he can still have the chance to prove himself innocent. this shows me as a reader dannys percistance to achive his freedom he is willing to recive a scentance of over 20 years instead of only 4 for a chance of being able to clear his name. this is extremly impressive for danny to have the forsight to think 20 years in the futre and decide that even if he has to spend that long to clear his name it is better than being known as a murder.  By pleading guilty to any crime the person is forced to be labelled as a criminal by society potentially ruining any opportunity for a job a family or many other desirable goals, even if they are innocent. It disgusted me that it was portrayed as a common practice that the lawers in charge of cases were encouraged to do so. This leads me to consider how many other people have been wrongly accused of a crime and taken a more minor scentance as a easy way out only to find  out that being labeled as a murder has much wider affects than simply the titel. this practice results in many incorrectly charged people to a difficult and unjust future. Ultimately this practice would not be necessary if the legal system was able to prevent innocent people from being charged. The practic of encouring the accused to plead down there sentance suggests to me that many of the lawers that take charge of the cases and suggest such a result do not truley care about the accused’s lifes in the long run. if they truly did it would be sugnificantly more likly that the actions taken would be more detailed and long term as this could allow for a more through approch leading to more scentances incorctly being applied.

Title: The Boy in Striped Pyjamas

Author: John Boyne

Text type: Novel

In the book “the boy in striped pyjamas” the main character Bruno is forced to move away from his home and live with his family in a place called Out-With. He is sad to leave his home and friends and constantly complains to the family that he wants somebody to play with. Early in the book when he is sitting in his room he looks out the window and sees a large fence. Beyond the fence, he sees many people and even some kids his age. All in striped pyjamas. As far as Bruno is concerned it is unfair that he is not allowed to play with the other kids. He does not know that his father is in charge of the concentration camp called Auschwitz. he does not comprehend the reasons he is split from the jews. This shows meas a reader that we all naturally work towards justice when we are young and the ability to be unjust like the many soldiers and his dad due to their actions is something they were taught. For them, they are doing justice as they perceive that after the first world war they were treated unfairly. They have been taught that this is a way for them to restore their country to its rightful place as the best country in the world. For them, this is justice and they are willing to do anything to achieve this. Bruno later walks along the fence and meets a boy his age on the other side of the fence. He does not know he is a jew and so he treats him like any other person and becomes his friend. He later asks his sister about the people on the other side of the fence. He learns that he should hate the jews because he was the opposite of them. However he still chooses to be a friend with the boy because he does not agree that they are that different. This demonstrates justice if only very small as he chooses to treat his friend fairly and creating equality between them. From this text, I realised that for different people in different situations they can perceive justice in entirely different ways. For Bruno’s father, his way of achieving justice was by restoring his country of Germany to its former glory. To do this he believed that he needed to run the camp Auschwitz as this is what he believed to lead to justice. he believes that justice can only be achieved by killing the jews as he explains to Bruno when he asks who they are he responds “Those people… well, they’re not people at all, Bruno”. this shows that Bruno’s father truly believes that he is a superior race to the jews for him this is justification to kill people such as the jews. However, Bruno does not see it like that. as bruno said to the boy “Well you’ve been brought here against your will, just like I have. If you ask me, we’re all in the same boat. And it’s leaking.”. he may be ignorint as to the greater situiation he still decides that the boy is his freinds despite his diffrences. He believes that he is just like his friend and even sneaks inside the camp to help his friend rescue his father. He treats him fairly and as his equal as he sees this as justice.  this also shows me that every person in the world is a product of there upbringing and the values that they have are directly connected to there experences and influenceres around them. this means that to truely understand someone requires an understanding of there values they developed when they were a child. at the end of the text the narrator says this “Of course all this happened a long time ago and nothing like that could ever happen again. Not in this day and age.”. this single quote that finishes of the book forces the readers to consider the posibility that somthing like this is happining in the wourld. like the dufurius in sudan the author challanges me as a reader to realise that we have not moved on and modernised as much as we would like to belive we have. many people would like to claim that such a herendous thing could never happen again but ignore the thousands of people killed wourld wide due to there ethnicity. john boyne picked this line as it challanges all reader to think about the real wourld and how the sad sstory he has told may really be being lived out elewere in the wourld.

Title: Shawshank Redemption

Director: Niki Marvin

Text type: Film

After watching the film “Shawshank Redemption”, I felt amazed at Andy’s ability to remain sane and functional despite the impossible odds of release. For most men being sentenced to serve 2 life sentences could easily make a man lose his mind, especially due to the brutality of his prison and knowing that he was unjustly assigned to it. the desire to be in the out side wourld can be so overpowering that it can lead a man to do stupid thing’s and as red  tells andy “Hope is a dangerous thing. It drive’s a man insane.”.For most people in any situation similar would bring forwards insanity and thoughts of ending it permanently. and as andy said “Get busy living or get busy dying.”however and was never one to give up and chose to focus on improvements such as the library shows that his persistence is in a class of his own. Due to Andy’s constant persistence for improvements when he decided he no longer could find any reason to stay he hatched a plan and it was revealed that for over a decade he had been slowly building an extremely long tunnel and made an escape with the necessary clothes, books and paperwork to resume a life as a fake person and withdraw thousands of dollars of funds he had been laundering for the warden. This allowed Andy to return to life just like his pre-prison life. this however did cause me to consider how the character of andy had changed from his prison experence as no doubt the experence is likly to have considiribly changed andy’s prespective of the wourld. as part of this thought i wonder what parts of the wourld he will aprociate more carfully. my gese is that he is likly to approch things more carfully as he has learnt the hard way that small choices can have huge unforseen repecutions such as througing gun in the river being one less peice of evedince for him. however i also did consider how many people dont get that opertunity to use what they have learnt in the outside wourld after getting a similar punishment unjustly. i wonder how there veiws would compare to andys experences. He also managed to smuggle out some paperwork showing the corruption that was caused by the warden resulting in an arrest warrant to be placed on him. This is true justice as the wrongs that have been committed against Andy have been repaid and the unjust prison authorities were revealed and treated accordingly. This film helped me realise how certain people can react in entirely unfair and cruel situations with intelligence to rationalise the situation and the ability to react to improve the outcomes. I realise that these people are the famous few that also help bring minority groups that are being treated unjustly into a better, more just and fair world. An example of such a person is Martin Luther King whose vision and action brought black and white men to equality.

Title: Gone Girl

Director: David Fincher

Text Type: Film

After watching the film Gone Girl I was left bewildered as to the motivations that drove the main characters to the actions they did. The main characters Nick and Amy Dunne were a married couple and their marriage was deteriorating after Nick was discovered to be having an affair with another woman. For Amy, this was a justification for her to leave Nick. However, she believed that Nicks actions were so unjust that she decided to frame her husband for her murder, in order to get him sent to prison and likely receive the death penalty. She believed that this was a justifiable response to his actions. she ensured the crime scene was meticulously set up so that all evidence pointed towards him as well as a book showing thoughts of her fear. she did this to align the public opinion to be that nick was a murder. it worked. at one stage nick went into an interview and the host said this “Nick Dunne. You’re probably the most hated man in America right now.”. this quote shows how her indirect manipulative behaviour is able to be used to devastating effect as nick an innocent man is able to be considered America’s most hated man . these actions show that her morals about what she considers to be justifiable are wildly misaligned with most peoples morals. this made me consider the absolute confusion that nick must be having as when he started his day before Amy was kidnapped he could have never expected to be in such a publicly exposed and critical environment. this helps me understand parts of nicks bizarre behaviour at multiple points in the film because he is simply shocked as to the speed that his life is changing. Nick was fully set up by his wife and when she came back and expected Nick to completely forget that he had tried to kill her. when it became clear that he was seriously considering leaving she got her self pregnant. This forced Nick into a difficult place were if he left he would have to fight for custody and would likely lose. This forces him to stay with Amy as he knows it is the only way to look after the baby. as he says to his sister margo “it’s going to be my child and I’m not going to leave it” and “I have a responsibility now, it’s not about what I want anymore”. these quotes show that nick is not going to dessert the child and is going to stay despite not liking Amy for the child’s sake. doing exactly as Amy predicted this again shows Amy manipulative nature over nick. This is an underhand way for Amy to keep the relationship together and is a manipulative approach to a relationship. this text caused me to think about how different the family around me is to Nick and Amy. in my family we are supportive of each other, we try to be helpful to the other members and we communicate any potential issues before they become an issue. in the film gone girl, we saw none of this family support and instead they took almost intentional steps to be harmful to each other. they also lacked any real communication about the problems and issues they were both facing. it struck me while watching the film that almost all the issues could have been avoided with proper communication between the 2 of them. this leads me to consider how many people cause unnecessary issues due to poor communications as to what they are thinking and feeling like Nick and Amy Dunne. I believe that many of the issues of the world are often over complicated and misinterpreted leading to poorly suited responses to the issues at hand. so proper communication between those in positions of power could solve many critical issues in the world simply by having a better understanding of other views through the use of more effective communication.

Title: Emmit Till

Author: Jessica McBirney

Text Type: Online article

Jessica McBirney article about Emmit Till revealed to me the horrific nature that black people were forced to deal with. Emmit Till was brutally murdered by a few white men simply for talking to a white female. Carolyn Bryant the women he talked to later said in an interview “nothing that boy did could ever justify what happened to him,” however he was still brutally murdered. this shows me the drastic differences in races approaches to issues as whatever happened in 1955 would never result in the same outcome in the modern world mainly due to all people being more accepting racially. however he was still brutally murdered, this shows the inequality between the two racial groups as the only true difference between white and black people is in the shade of their skin. The colour of a person’s skin does not decide who they are, so it’s completely unjustifiable to classify a group of people as inferior based only on their skin. So because there is no real difference between black and white people, using their skin colour as justification for murder is completely unjustifiable as the morals they are basing their actions upon are straight-up wrong. White people developed these morals from those close to them when they were young like parents, siblings and friends. So they developed their flawed morals with the influence of others and therefore are prone to unjust actions. This teaches me that the influences of the people around people are incredibly important to the development of ethical morals and therefore the ability to act with justice. This helps me realise that people in the world that act unethically and unjustifiably may do so partly due to the influencers such as family and friends in their life. at the end of the text, the author says this “Even more disturbingly, there have been thousands of other African Americans who were also lynched, and many of their names have been erased from history. Because of the circumstances surrounding his death and Mamie Till’s refusal to let his death be in vain, his story has become one of the most well-known.” this quote shows how Mamie till fought to ensure her son’s death was not in vain and that action could begin. this quote encourages me to consider the many other people that ended up dying and there love ones chose not to take action like Mamie did. this leads me to consider what biases there are in the world today that are not revealed to the wider population as those affected don’t take action like Mamie did and speak out and challenge the wider population to consider the full biases and there affects.

Title: Red Cloud’s speech after the Wounded Knee Massacre

Author: Chief Red Cloud

Text Type: Written speech

Red Cloud’s speech after the Wounded knee massacre made me relieved that the injustices that were forced upon the Indians were finally resolved. Red Cloud was an American Indian chief who was forced to endure injustices caused by the government. as red cloud talks about the new government he says this “An Indian Department was made with a large number of agents and other officials drawing large salaries — then came the beginning of trouble; these men took care of themselves but not of us.” this quote shows that at the very start those that were intended to look after and speak there perspectives were only there for the money. this causes me to consider whether this part of the government was corrupt in its creation as the priorities of the department such as protecting the Indians never aligned with the officials in charge. this leads me to consider how different America would be today if the Indians had gotten proper support and representation through the government. The Indians were accused of being lazy and bad workers despite being given small amounts of time to find a job and little guidance as to how to do their job. Their rations were reduced. Their ponies were taken away with from them with promises of strong horses and ox. Deals that were never fully honoured. When the census came around they were accused of wasting food when the reality was that there was no food to waste. And again their rations were reduced. Eventually, they began to pray aloud to God and beg for their lives. The white men thought that they wanted their lives. The white men were terrified and sent for soldiers. They told the Indians that they would be killed. Most of them did not worry, however some ran to the hills. when the soldiers arived they said “don’t be afraid — we come to make peace not, war.”. Despite them working for the government they still understood that to do anything harmful to the Indians, as they were told to do, would be unjust and unethical.this shows me that people such as the soldiers are able to act morally and ethically was impressive as they could have easily decided that it was not their responsibility to make the choices and simply blamed those in charge. Instead, they dared to acknowledge that the Indians had done nothing wrong and so deserved to not be punished. this shows me that people able to choose the actions that they take and the repecusions even though they may belive that it is not there place to make a decion. The soldiers decion created equality and non-discrimination towards the Indians and shows that the military acted with justice towards the situation. However, not all people are courageous enough to act with equality and justice. This made me consider how many people are in a situation where they know that what they are doing does not create justice or equality but they still chose to do it. I think it is likely that it is surprisingly uncommon for people to act as the military did whether that is due to social pressure or people lacking the courage to act. This idea highlights the courage the group of soldiers had to act justly when it would have been easy to simply do as they were told.

It is a winter morning, most houses are still asleep as the sun begins to break through the horizon. The beaming sun illuminates the ice crystals of frost settling down on the ground below creating a chilled white world. The little street was quiet despite being filled to the brim with frozen cars. The line of small boats began its early morning march from the park ahead to the nearby crystal lake.

Look. Beyond the skinny street and beyond a bare section, a creek is trickling down through the cold world to empty itself into the nearby lake. Steam is rising off the lake creating a thin cloud floating above. The reflection formed on the lake below looks as if it is a piece of artwork from Leanardo de Vinci. Above this cloud, the upper mountains are rising through to stand boldly on display. Look, the frost sparkles like the many stars in the sky. The last embers burn out and settle in the fireplace the last reminder of the fire that raged so intense.

It is a Sunday morning. Fantails, Tuis and Bellbirds all remained silent in respect of the cold morning. Illuminating sunlight broke down from above to bonce off the cold icy mirror below to create a bright white landscape beyond the house. Time moves forward. Low hanging cloud has given way to a baby blue sky and below the full extension of the lake is shown. Stretching on and on, morphing into the mountains that are now fully revealed with nothing to hide there awe-inspiring might. Trees that once look so huge and strong are now reduced to a skeleton of their warm-weather self’s. the pines are standing in bold display. they stand tall to show off their one of kind year-round coats. Small boats are resting on the motionless lake tied in place waiting patiently for their owners.

Feel. Sparkling white blades of grass collapse underfoot. Frozen air washing over the skin like coolant in an engine. Fingers tingle as if the gloves poke from all angels. Feel the warm jacket encompassing a cold body. The phone in the pocket constantly pokes my stomach like a little kid fighting for attention.  the flapping hood around my neck is a flag in the wind. straps pulled down on my shoulders reminding me of the heavy content on my shoulders. feel the shoes on pedals sliding up and down the pedals.

Listen. The chain squeaks under load while the pedal moans of a tormented life but still you push on. Wind whistles through your hair as tyers squirm as the bike dances up the track through the deserted streets. Onwards you ride into a flow of people following the winding paths towards gates. You walk your bike into school and push the squeaky tire into the solid rack. The quiet. It’s gone. Replaced by the constant chatter sounding as loud and constant as a flock of geese. You walk into school, and through the maze of endless corridors and fields. As you arrive at your destination the bell sings it’s repetitive song. Class has begun.

Analyze how film techniques were used to present an idea in the text.

The film Fargo by the Coen brothers uses specific film techniques to present to the reader the idea of greed. To present this idea the Coen brothers used these film techniques. Lighting, costume and dialogue to display to the viewer the idea of greed.

Lighting was used in the film to display characters certain characters as greedy. the term greedy is defined as “intense and selfish desire for something, especially wealth, power, or food”. An example of when the lighting was used to portray the characters as greedy was the scene was when Jerry met with Carl and Gaear in the pub and he was shown with only half his face illuminated. The lighting was used on Jerry shows a dodgy side of jerry represented by the shadow on half his face to show he is hiding part of who he is. Jerrys face is half covered in shadow to hide from others who he is. He choices to hide his as revealing it would also reveal his intentions which would spoil his plans to earn money. The Coen brothers chose to portray Jerry like this as by him choosing to hide who he is as well as his intentions it demonstrates that Jerry’s priority is money above being honest and transparent. This demonstrates that Jerry is a greedy person as he has a selfish desire for money which fits the definition of greed. This shows that Jerry is a greedy person.

Costume was used throughout the film to show there relative positions and how the difference displays greed. In the film when we are first introduced to Wade he is wearing a dark red overcoat as well as a dark purple jumper underneath. The dark colours are chosen because we as readers associate the dark colours of the clothes he is wearing to royalty. This tells us that wade is a character with lots of money and power. Jerry introduced to us wearing a light brown jacket and a black hat. These are simple colours used to show a lack of sophistication and therefore less wealth and power. The character Wade despite being family with Jerry choices not to share his wealth with Jerry and instead keep it to himself. Wade is so obvious that he will not share his money with Jerry that Jerry decides he must take illegal methods to get money. Wade’s insistence to keep his own money and not share it with his family actually makes him become a greedy man as he choices to keep hold of his abundance of money and not help his family. This demonstrates that wades selfish desire to keep the money to fits the definition of greed making him a greedy man.

Dialogue was used throughout the film to display to the reader the idea of greed. When he is offered the finders fee from wade he says this. ” No, see, I don’t need a finder’s fee, I need a… finder’s fee’s, what, ten percent? Heck, that’s not gonna do it for me. I need the principal!”. Jerry’s sentences are short showing his thoughts aren’t clear and concise as they would be if he was comfortable and talking his time. This suggests to the reader that the offer for only the finders fee was not what he had expected and as a result gave him a fright. This is because for him 10% is significantly smaller than the principal and he will not be happy with only 10%. This displays to the reader that his greed is clouding his judgment so much that when he is offered only the 10% he continues to argue until he is completely cut out of the deal. This displays to the reader that for Jerry a little bit of money is not good enough and he is willing to potentially lose his 10% for the chance to have the whole thing even when it is almost certain he won’t get it. This is not a normal human response as most would take the 10% this shows that Jerry is greedy because he chose to make that decision. The Coen brothers choice to display him like this to reinforce that his intense pursuit of money makes him a greedy man by ensuring he fits the definition of greed.

In conclusion, The film Fargo directed by the Coen brothers uses the film techniques of lighting, costume and dialogue to demonstrate to the reader the idea of greed.

essay question: Analyse how characters were used to explore the concept of justice.

the book “and then there were none” written by Agatha Christie explores the concept of justice using several characters on an island with them slowly being killed off by someone on the island. this allows Agatha Cristie to explore the cases of justice through the individual characters. examples such as vera’s position in the order of killing, the order of killing itself and why justice Wargrave had to kill everybody personly are all examples of justice occurring.

an example that Agatha Christie uses is the character Vera claythorne. Vera Clayrthorne is used to explore justice throughout the book an example of this is because justice Wargrave believes that Vera crime is the most severe he decides that the justest course of action is to leave vera alive for the longest so she can endure the emotional trauma of 9 other people dying around her . this is justice in the eyes of justice Wargrave as this is what he feels she deserves as her crime is not punishable in court so he believes it must be done. this raises the question of whether a person that understands what leads up to a murder and what actually happened whether they should be able to have justice by killing the person that gets away with there crime or whether its murder no matter the situation. if it is justice to kill somebody who has gotten away with murder then it is just that Wargrave killed vera however if that is not the case then that means that Wargrave has murdered vera.

another example is the character justice Wargrave which is used as the character that is making decisions behind the sense as to which courses of action results in the proper justice for each character. an example of this we can find in the book is in the epilogue were he states that the order he chose to kill off the characters was based on the level of guilt felt for there crimes. so those that felt the most guilt for there crimes had to endure the slow process of the rest of the characters being killed off around them. this was what justice Wargrave believed to be the most justifiable course of action. however, it raises the question of whether this order was, in fact, it was the most justifiable course of action. it may justifiable to have killed the criminals off in order of the least amount of people killed to the most. this may perhaps have been a more justifiable way to have done it as the person that has affected the most lives would be punished worst. however certain crimes are worse then others for example if we were to compare vera claythorne and Mrs Rogers they both killed 1 person which would mean that they would be killed at the same time despite vera claythornes crime being much more severe than Mrs Roger. so perhaps it should have been a combination of most lives affected and the nature they were carried out in.

Mr Wargrave made the decision that the crimes that the people on the island carried out were too severe to allow them to continue to live as a result he decided that he personly would have to kill everyone that came to the island as that would be the best way to achieve justice. his choice to personly kill everybody on the island to achieve justice is the way he perceives to be the best way to achieve justice however if he had killed everybody on the island and walked away justice would not have been carried out as he would be guilty of murdering 9 other people he was likely aware of this. because he was aware of this it may have been the reson why he chose to kill himself then instead of waiting for the cancer to claim him. however if he had chosen to hire an assassin to kill everybody for him he would have been aware that it would not be justice as both him and the assassin would then be guilty of murder which only shifts the blame this is why justice Wargrave chose not to hire an assassin for him as he knew it could not bring justice properly.

in conclusion, I believe that Vera’s position in the killing order, the killing order itself and why Wargrave had to kill everybody personally. help the reader to explore the concepts of justice and allow the reader to learn about justice in this situation.

Racing

The sun rises above the hills and illuminates the frozen fields surrounding us, as we make our way on winding roads.  My nerves. I can’t stop them. My mind is anticipating the future, the very near future. however, I am excited. I know I’m ready and look forward to that future. I try to bring my mind back. breath in, breath out. It becomes repetitive and soon I am in a consistent rhythm.  We arrive and I begin the well-routined practice of transitions. Get the number, rack the bike, attach the shoes and position the running shoes with open mouths. With everything positioned its now time to warm up. I do a short jog seeing the ocean. The sun is calmly breaking the sea mists hold on the land as it has done many times before. As if has no idea of the chaos about to begin. Before long I am there, in a black suit standing ankle deep in the water, ready to race.  The nerves. There still there. Deep breaths, Focus. A horn goes off the nerves are gone, I am focused.

The line. I have crossed it. I am done, finally I am done. My slow methodical thinking from before is now replaced by shallow breaths in a rapid succession along with spontaneous thoughts that leave as fast as they come.  I begin to start to slowly walk but it is more of a hobble, my previously abundant energy has now been littered all over the course leaving nothing for me. I stop and look around. The sun has taken hold and banished the sea fog away for another day, leaving the sun to warm our souls.  It’s over I know it. I did well, went hard so I am happy. I go to the previously meticulous transition area and find my gear strewn over the transition. I don’t care, they have done their job well. I proceed with chucking them in a bag to allow myself to neglect them until we are home. As I go for a warm down jog I reflect on the race and take notes of the important moments as to improve for next time. We load into the car and hit the road, I watch as the sun makes its way behind the hills to rest. letting the night take hold. apparently, I am not the only one tired.

For survival in the harshest conditions, one must rely on internal dialogue or “the voice” to guide them through the toughest of decisions.  internal dialogue guides people through the toughest conditions through the use of motivation for the person and encouragement of the correct decisions even if they are difficult. internal dialogue ability to guide people through these difficult scenarios is what makes it such a necessity for those in difficult scenarios. the texts “touching the void” by Jo Simpson “into thin air” by Jon Krakauer “between a rock and a hard place” by Aron Ralston and “into  the wild” by Jon Krakauer all show the importance of internal dialogue through there experiences with it as well as what happens  when the internal dialogue is ignored.

in “touching the void”  by Joe Simpson internal dialogue keeps Joe focused on survival in the extreme circumstances because of internal dialogue in his head guiding him.  this is shown throughout the text but one of its first appearances is when Joe is being lowered by Simon at a fast pace until eventually Joe slides of a cliff Simon is unaware of this and continues to lower Joe. when it is time for Joe to underweight the rope he cannot because he is hanging on the rope. because Simon does not know he is hanging so he continues to wait holding Joe’s weight. however, when conditions worsen and he starts sliding downwards his internal dialogue suggests to him to use the knife to cut the rope. this thought’s shown with this quote”The knife! The thought came out of nowhere. Of course, the knife. Be quick, come on, get it.”. the imperative sentences like the knife, be quick, get it.  they are all commands or simple instructions that are easy to follow. this is important because in extreme scenarios the human mind can not function as it would in other cases it is mostly focused on surviving what is happening. it is easier to survive when things are simpler this is why it is short and simple sentences as it allows the brain to focus on achieving the goal instead of struggling to understand what is happening.  this is reinforced later in the text when Joe is attempting to climb out of the cassavas with his injured leg he is repeating to himself as he climbs “That’s the way. Find a routine and stick to it.” this is short sentences that are clear and serve to encourage himself and then more instructions about what to do next. these short sentences encourage Joe to keep working and focus on what is happening now and where he needs to head. this makes it similar for Joe to focus on the task at hand and ignore the distractions IE his leg hurting. this helps the reader to clearly see what is happening what Joe is focusing on what he needs to be focusing on and most importantly what he is thinking.

“into thin air” by Jon Krakauer is another text that shows the very real need for internal dialogue. while Jon Krakauer is attempting to climb Everest   with his guide rob hall and the other paying customers he talks about mountaineering issues and topics on the way up one of the things he talks about is how important it is to listen to distress calls and to listen to them. this is shown when he says ” the sort of individual who is programmed to ignore personal distress and keep pushing for the top is frequently programmed to disregard signs of grave and imminent danger as well.”. this quote talks about those people that ignore and push past there limits often do not know when is too much this puts in grave danger of going too far and injuring them self on the mountain. however, if they were to listen to there personal distress calls they would be in a better mindset and more prepared to face difficult scenarios. because of there personal distress calls being listened to people are normally closer to there comfort zone meaning that they will be better suited to making life and death decisions. another point where internal dialogue is shown is when Jon and his group are making there way up the Khumbu icefall a treacherous and unpredictable piece on the way up to Everest. while he is going through here he makes the comment “my inner voice resembles Chicken Little: it was screaming that I was about to die” here the inner voice is surviving for Joe as something that allows him to know that he is at risk of injury. because he knows now that he is at risk he will be more precarious on the way up also when he says that his inner voice resembles chicken little he is showing that his inner voice is very afraid and often resembling chicken little. this is mostly a good thing during climbing as it shows the reader that he is unlikely to take risks and is likely to be taking the safest route if he listens to his inner voice. the reader can learn from this that it is often those who take risks often and make habits of it are often those that go too far and may not be able to come back, however, those that listen to there inner voice are unlikely to make rash unguided decisions and are likely to take the route that will get them down alive. this shows the reader that the people that listen to there inner voice will be more likely to survive when compared with those that do not.

like the book touching the void, into thin air clearly displays to the reader that those that listen to there inner voice / internal dialogue are significantly more likely to take a better route to stay motivated and “keep their eyes on the prize” as such the prize ultimately being survival when things go sourer.  for joe, it was making it back to camp before Simon left and for and for Jon it was making through the mountain safety however for those in their everyday lives it could be that they need to get through a difficult day.

in “between a rock and a hard place” by Aron Ralston internal dialogue is used to keep Aron the main character focused on survival. Aaron Ralston is an adventurer in the USA how is commonly climbed many mountains and survived the harshest of terrain. however, when he decided to go through a canyon he was jumping on choke stones making his way through when one of the stones rolled under his weight and pinned his arm between the walls and the choke stone . in order for him to survive he listened to his internal dialogue which guided him through the experience. one example of this is once he is first trapped by the choke stone he notes this “My mind commands my body, “Get your hand out of there!” “this here is an example were internal dialogue is completely controlling his every move in order to test the waters and evaluate what is happing. this shows under extreme stress that Aron is feeling with his arm being trapped the mind takes control of the body to stop any irrational actions to occur. this is because of the mind’s reasoning in these scenarios is far better then irrational actions that may cause the situation to worsen if the body panics and takes all control.  another area of the text that supports the use of the internal dialogue is when Aron is stuck in the canyon he talks to the camera about his struggles and his thoughts these thoughts are really Aron trying to wrap his head around what is happening and by vocalizing his thoughts he is able to become more confident with his decisions and talk about things so he can control his emotions. he starts by saying “its two pm on a Wednesday afternoon. it’s getting close to four days that I have been in this hole.” he then finishes off by addressing his loved ones by saying “I’m holding on but its really slowing down…thank you love you”. by him being able to talk about what is happing what the time and date and etc is he is able to reflect and look back and what has happened by him being able to do this he can think to the future it is most likely the mental voice in his head encouraging him to do this as it knows that he can not concentrate the same thing applies to his message for the loved ones he is talking about  what is on his mind by doing this he is sharing it with what could be other people if they find the camera so he sees it as a way to talk to his family. also when he is talking about it getting really slow but that he is still holding on he is motivating himself to in the future so he can think this is where I have been and this is where I need to go. these thoughts being said to the camera are encouraged by the voice to stop Aron from living in the past so instead, he can focus on the now. this can teach the reader that sharing emotions is often driven by a voice in the head to allow the person to be able to focus on the now even in extreme situations.

between a rock and a hard place relates to touching the void as most if not all of  Joe’s and Aron’s thoughts are to get him in the correct mindset to be able to be able to focus on what he needs to be doing even when his body or his mind starts to break. these thoughts of survival are derived from the voice encouraging Joe and Aron to think like this. which keeps them in the correct mindset to tackle their challenges.

in “into the wild” by Jon Krakauer, internal dialogue is uncommon often making it more difficult and then impossible for him to survive. this is shown at a few key points throughout the text. into thin air by Jon Krakauer talks about a young man called Chris McCandless how goes of on his own after finishing university and travels around the united states of America and never contacts his family he travelled around the USA with many near-death experiences before deciding that he wanted to try to survive on his own in Alaska so he travelled up and attempted to survive for a spring to autumn time frame.he later died through his experiences as he was not able to cross back over one of the rivers so had to wait it out. as his sister noted to Jon when being interviewed. “now, of course, they second-guess the decision, even though buck was really badly hurt..my parent’s can’t help wondering how things may have tuned out differently if Chris had taken Buck with him. Chris didn’t think twice before putting himself in danger but he never would have put Buck in any danger.” this shows to the reader that Chris’s sister thinks things could have turned out differently if Chris had taken Buck.  so if Chris had taken buck then perhaps he may have not taken anywhere near the risks that he did end up taking in order to protect the dog buck. if Chris had taken the dog he would have used the internal dialogue effectively meaning he would be able to make sure that he didn’t succumb to an unfortunate disaster leaving Buck on his own. however he did not end up taking the dog and because of this, he chose mostly to ignore his internal dialogue in most situations. as a result of this, he ended up in a hopeless situation and died. from this, a reader can conclude that those who use there internal dialogue will have a significantly greater chance of survival because of this they are in a much better place for survival.

in comparison with touching the void by Jo Simpson  into the wild shows none of the important internal dialogue moments that help with survival in extreme situations because of a lack of internal dialogue Chris ends up dying while Joe and Simon both survive using internal dialogue to help their motivation and because of this they are able to survive through the calming and reasoning of internal dialogue. this shows the reader that it is essential to have internal dialogue in extreme situations and also highlights how important it is to listen to it and those that don’t listen to it run the risk of death through there decisions being unregulated without the voice.

a person survival is dependent on the quality of decisions that they make and the attitude they approach these decisions and carry the way they carry out there answers. this is shown to the reader through the books “into thin air” by  Joe Simpson, “touching the void” by Jon Krakauer, “between a rock and a hard place” by Aron Ralston ” and “into the wild” by Jon Krakauer all display to the reader how internal dialogue is an absolute necessity for survival when people are in extreme situations. through the different representation of the voice and what happens when the voice is ignored we learn as readers what the voice is what it is trying to achieve and how we can best use it and how it can affect the characters in the extreme scenarios .  as humans we are faced with many decisions some more important than others with the crucial decisions we must make it is important to listen to internal dialogue when making decisions.
